Lauren Cox was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay area and competed nationally as a rhythmic gymnast with the aid of ballet, modern and contortion for eleven years. She's trained, choreographed and competed at the World Hip Hop Championships for six years with the hip hop troupe Culture Shock Oakland while studying Afro-Haitian dance and Sociology at San Francisco State University as well as directing the youth hip hop group, Future Shock Marin. She moved on to co-founding "Groove Against the Machine San Francisco" and its youth group "A Tribe Called Groove" spreading the word of unity through dance.
Lauren then immersed herself into samba, culture and language in Rio de Janeiro while traveling Brazil for one year. She moved to NYC in 2010 in order to converge and elevate all talents. Lauren has had the pleasure of training in various styles at Broadway Dance Center as well as training her freestyle with the amazing Valentine Norton, and has performed at Choreographers Carnival NYC for Jared Jenkins. She is the principal dancer for social rights choreographer James Koroni, has appeared in the play "Lemon Meringue" and is currently studying under “the queen of street jazz”, Rhapsody James. She is also the Portuguese Translator for Broadway Dance Center and The PULSE On Tour Brazil. Lauren is very excited to be joining the Breaking Ground family and promises to bring her knowledge of self, history, health and hip hop to every class!
